Step 1: Check that you actually need it
Worth two minutes before you spend anything. Florida requires a Boating Safety Education ID Card from people born on or after a set date who operate a boat over a set horsepower, and exempts several groups entirely. We walk through it in do you need a Florida boating license.
Step 2: Pick an approved provider
Only a course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission produces a card Florida recognizes. Approval is not a marketing claim you can take on trust, so check for it. Two other things are worth comparing before you pay:
- Whether the card fee is included. Some providers advertise a low course price and add the state card fee at the end.
- Whether retakes cost extra. If a provider charges for a second attempt, the advertised price is not the price.
Our own course is $49.95 with the card fee included and retakes free. There is also a $19 option for the state’s temporary certificate exam, which covers you in Florida for a short time but does not lead to the permanent card.
Step 3: Work through the course
The state sets what an approved course must cover, so the subject matter is the same wherever you take it: the legal requirements, the equipment you must carry, navigation rules, what to do when something goes wrong, and the rules specific to Florida waters.
What differs is how it is delivered. Ours is twelve short chapters with a quiz after each one, so you find out whether a chapter landed while it is still fresh rather than at the end. Progress saves after every question.
Step 4: Sit the final exam
The exam is 75 questions drawn at random, and the pass mark is 76%. Questions come one at a time and you answer them in order.
If you do not pass, you retake it. Your course progress stays where it was, and there is no additional charge.
Step 5: Print your certificate
The moment you pass, you can download and print your course completion certificate. With a photo ID it meets Florida’s requirement while your card is made, which is why this can be done the night before a trip rather than weeks ahead.
Step 6: The permanent card arrives
Your completion is reported to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for you, and the permanent Boating Safety Education ID Card follows by mail. Keep it with you when you are operating — Florida requires that you be able to produce it on the water, and a card in a drawer at home does not count.
What it costs, and what to watch for
Florida boating courses generally run from around twenty to around fifty dollars. The number on the landing page is not always the number you pay, so before you enter a card, check three things: is the state card fee included, are retakes free, and is there a charge to reprint your certificate later. Those three cover most of the difference between an advertised price and a final one.
Our refund policy is 30 days, in full, as long as you have not opened the first chapter.
Common questions
How long does it take to get a Florida boating license online?
The course takes about three to four hours, and you do not have to do it in one sitting. Once you pass the final exam you can print your course completion certificate immediately, so the whole thing can be done the day before a trip.
Can I take the course on my phone?
Yes. The course is one column, big tap targets, and your progress saves after every question, so losing signal at a marina does not cost you anything.
What happens if I fail the exam?
You retake it. Retakes are included at no extra cost and your course progress is not reset.
Do I have to send anything to the state myself?
No. An approved provider reports your completion to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on your behalf.
This article explains Florida boating rules in plain terms. It is not legal advice, and the law is what the statute says rather than what we summarise. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission publishes the current requirements.
